What happened in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3?
The episode opens with Daemon confronting the Hightower army alongside three dragons, demanding that Lord Ormund hand over the young Daeron. Although Ormund appears to comply, it is later revealed that the boy he surrendered was only a decoy, while the real prince remains hidden.
Meanwhile, King’s Landing is facing a severe financial crisis after the kingdom’s gold reserves were removed, and the ongoing rat infestation continues to plague the city. Against that backdrop, the new queen turns to Alicent for advice on how to rule, while the Faith refuses to officially recognize Rhaenyra as queen because she did not observe a mourning period for King Aegon.
Rhaenyra also faces growing tensions within her own faction. Lord Corlys asks that Alys and Addam be officially recognized as Velaryons to secure the succession of Driftmark, but his request is denied. Later, the appointment of new dragonriders, including Hugh Hammer, Hugh the White, and Addam of Hull, sparks a confrontation when Rhaenyra refuses to grant Addam the Velaryon name.
As unrest grows over food shortages, Rhaenyra hosts a dinner for King’s Landing’s wealthy citizens, confronting them over hoarding supplies while the Royal Guard seizes food from their storehouses. She then sends Daemon to the Vale to demand tribute from Lady Jeyne and continue the search for Daeron.
In the final moments of the episode, Rhaenyra begins distributing food directly to the people after being rejected by the Faith, believing the gesture will strengthen her legitimacy. The episode ends with the revelation of Ormund Hightower’s deception, the burning of House Hightower’s banners to the cry of “Burn them all,” and the growing conflict at Tumbleton, where a dragonkeeper warns that attacking the invaders would also put innocent civilians at risk.
