Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” remains one of her most beloved and deeply personal songs.

Drawing inspiration from her childhood in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the track has become a part of Dolly’s legacy and will likely continue touching hearts for generations to come.

The song recalls how her mother lovingly stitched together scraps of fabric to make Dolly a coat because the family could not afford to buy one. Dolly was one of 12 children in her family.

For Dolly, the coat meant far more than what it appeared. She remembered being teased at school by children who did not fully understand her family’s circumstances. While others saw a coat made from scraps, Dolly saw something her mother had created especially for her.

In 2015, Dolly offered fans a heartfelt glimpse into her childhood with the made-for-TV movie Coat of Many Colors, inspired by that song. To this day, “Coat of Many Colors” is widely regarded as one of Dolly’s best hits, along with “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Six-String Soldiers Honor Dolly Parton

In honor of Dolly’s tragic passing, the U.S. Army Field Band’s Six-String Soldiers delivered a heartfelt acoustic rendition of “Coat of Many Colors.”

“As our nation and people worldwide mourn the loss of the musical legend Dolly Parton, we remember and celebrate her decades of support for U.S. military service members and their families, including her USO visit to Fort Hood during Operation Desert Storm and, more recently, her participation in the USO’s Military Virtual Programming series,” the group wrote.

The Six-String Soldiers are a country and Americana ensemble made up of professional musicians serving in the U.S. Army. As part of the U.S. Army Field Band, the group combines military service with live musical performances.

Dolly graciously participated in the USO’s Military Virtual Programming (MVP) series in December of 2022, giving deployed service members and their families an opportunity to connect with her virtually.
