A young soldier who walked in Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral procession died less than two weeks later. His loved ones believe he died by suicide.

Jack Burnell-Williams, who served in the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and walked with the late monarch’s coffin during her funeral in September 2022, was found unresponsive shortly after at army barracks in London and was pronounced dead. He was 18.

At the time, Metropolitan Police told PEOPLE that the death of the soldier from South Wales was “unexpected” but was not being treated as suspicious.

According to a new report from The Daily Mail published on Saturday, Jan. 10, Burnell-Williams’ family and friends believe he died by suicide.

An inquest into the teen’s death is now scheduled to take place in February 2026, over three years after he was found dead, according to a memo from Victoria Sedgwick, the lawyer representing his mother, Laura Williams.

“My client’s main priority is to fully understand what happened and, if appropriate, for changes to be made so that other families will not have to endure what she has been through,” Sedgwick said in the memo, published Friday, Jan. 9. “My client greatly respects the coroner’s duty to investigate Jack’s death and will not be making any comments until this process has concluded.”

“The forthcoming inquest will provide Jack’s mother with an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the events surrounding his death and to have her questions answered,” she continued.

Burnell-Williams’ mother is also urging the army to look into the mental health of its young members, according to The Daily Mail. An army spokesperson told the outlet that it will share its internal investigations following the inquest.

Sedgwick did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, Jan. 11, nor did a spokesperson for her firm.

Burnell-Williams’ colleagues described him as an “endearing character” with an “infectious smile,” according to The Daily Mail.

The South Wales native served with the Household Cavalry and walked with the Queen’s coffin from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch, before he was found dead days later, The Guardian previously reported.

“It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Trooper Jack Burnell-Williams on 28 September 2022 at Hyde Park Barracks,” an army spokesperson told the publication at the time. “Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time and we ask that their privacy is respected.”

Queen Elizabeth died on Sept. 8, 2022, at age 96. Her funeral and burial took place on Sept. 19.
