This August 31 marks 29 years since Princess Diana’s death at just 36 years old in a 1997 Paris car crash. Unbelievably, in 2027, 30 years will have passed since the seismic loss that was felt around the world—but none felt it more acutely than her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The brothers aren’t thought to have spoken to one another since 2022 and their grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s funeral that September. Much has happened since that time, including—unexpectedly—Harry’s return to the U.K. on August 26, alongside his wife Meghan Markle and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The Sussexes spent six years in the United States—Montecito, California, specifically—and are now back in Britain for what is being described as an extended stay.

Though William and Harry are closer geographically than they’ve been since 2020, the two are still locked in a rift that shows no signs of abating. Though they haven’t spoken since September 2022, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex were in the same physical space in 2024, for the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes. The two didn’t interact at that occasion, and, though crossing paths is more likely now with Harry back in his home country, it’s unknown if or when the two will spend time together.

According to royal biographer Robert Jobson, one event might reunite the brothers after so much distance, both physical and emotional—the 30-year anniversary of Diana’s death in one year’s time. Assuming William and Harry actually make it a full 366 days without running into one another, that “quite significant” occasion could serve as a potential launchpad for time spent face-to-face.

Marking the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death could see William and Harry “on the same stage” again, Jobson told Hello!. “How can they not be together?” he asked.

“The ownership of the Diana legacy is something I think Harry has been really pursuing,” Jobson added, pointing specifically to Harry’s visits to Angola, where he worked with anti-landmine charities, just as his mother once did in the same country. “There’s going to be a moment where there has to be some form of arrangement for the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death,” he added, noting, “They have to be on the same stage.”

Yet, Jobson continued, “I think that we’re going to see more of Harry trying to take over the ownership of Diana’s legacy, which is bound to irritate his brother.”

Jobson previously told Hello! that Harry’s surprise return to the U.K. likely left William “feeling slightly aghast.” While back in Britain, neither Harry nor Meghan is expected to resume the working royal roles they stepped away from to move to the U.S. in 2020.

“The prodigal son coming back will be difficult for him,” Jobson said of the future king. “Harry’s move puts pressure on him to act in a more pragmatic way.”

While that poignant anniversary could serve as the what to unite William and Harry, as far as the who, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said that brothers Charlie van Straubenzee and Thomas van Straubenzee would be “obvious mediators” to bring William and Harry “back together.” William has been close to Thomas for decades, and Harry is friends with Thomas’s younger brother Charlie.

“The van Straubenzee brothers could pull off the most extraordinary feat if they joined forces to bring William and Harry together,” Fitzwilliams told The Daily Mail. He added, “What makes the brothers ideal is that, apart from being close to both of them, Thomas is especially close to William and Charlie to Harry.”

That said, Fitzwilliams added, any reunion or attempt to bring William and Harry together “most certainly won’t be easy,” he said.

Now that he’s back in the U.K., the outlet reported that Harry is expected to reunite with friends like Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, as well as Guy Pelly and Mark Dyer. Those men all have ties to William, as well—Grosvenor is godfather to Prince George, Pelly is godfather to Prince Louis, and Dyer was “a steadying influence during William’s early years,” The Daily Mail reported.

Harry and Meghan’s move back to the U.K. is something they’ve been planning “for some time,” a source told People, adding that the couple “feel it’s the right thing for their family, but that doesn’t mean leaving [Montecito] was easy.”

The insider added that the pair isn’t considering it “a goodbye forever,” but rather something akin to “We’ll be back, but this is what we’re doing right now.”

“Meghan really loves their life in Montecito and their home there,” the source added. “They know it’s going to take a little bit of time for everyone to settle in and adjust. There’s excitement about what’s ahead, too, especially for the kids. They’re really happy for them and everything they’ll get to experience.”
