Prince George is due to start at Eton next week, and the young royal will no doubt look incredibly dapper in the school’s historic uniform.

The uniform has changed a lot since Eton was established back in the 15th century, with students no longer wearing top hats or shirts with colourful collars. Instead, the dignified uniform now consists of a long blazer with tails, a white shirt and pinstriped trousers.

However, there is one part of the uniform that will signify how well George is doing at Eton, and it no doubt would make his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, incredibly proud.

Prefects at Eton are allowed to wear a wing collar with a white bow tie, and if George attains the rank, then he will follow in his father’s footsteps. Another way for George to follow in William’s footsteps is by becoming part of the Eton Society, known as ‘Pops’.

Members of this exclusive group are elected by their fellow students and teachers, and they are typically chosen for their leadership skills and contributions to school life. Those who serve as ‘Pops’ are seen wearing a silk waistcoat that features a bright colour.

William also served as a Pop during his time at Eton, and royal fans may remember the future King of England wearing a waistcoat featuring the Union Jack.

Prince George’s new term at Eton

When he starts at Eton, George will be afforded his own room, although not because of his lineage, but because all boys at the iconic institution are granted their own private dormitories. In fact, the policy is put in place to encourage “self-discipline”.

Eton’s official website explains: “From the very beginning, each boy has his own study-bedroom: there are no shared rooms. Boys thus have their own private space and are required to organise themselves and to develop self-discipline in meeting tasks and deadlines.”

George no doubt will have been given plenty of insights into what to expect given that his father also studied at Eton.

The father-of-three has spoken highly of his time there, explaining that he “really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student,” noting that it was good to not feel “like he was special” during his formative school years.

And if George ever ends up feeling homesick, Windsor Castle is only a short walk away. Speaking to HELLO!, The Good Schools’ Guide’s managing editor Melanie Sanderson said: You can see Eton College from Windsor Castle. So that would be lovely for George to be able to pop home.

“And the boys now are allowed a little bit of freedom to pop in and out of school at the weekends, to come home for Sunday lunch or tea on a Saturday evening after their sports fixtures.”
